Who is SMES engineering?
SMES engineering is run by Stan Mertens. A freelance engineer with over 20 years of experience in assembly, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair.
From a young age, it was clear that a technical career would follow. After high school, I’ve joined the Royal Netherlands Navy as an technical engineer, doing maintenance and repairs on computer systems, sensor systems and other systems. This included electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems. Serving on Her Majesty ships, all problems that appear, need to be addressed with limited support. After 6 years, I moved to the position of instructor for new engineers. Training the students in system knowledge, troubleshooting and procedures.
Afterwards I’ve joined ASML, a leading semiconductor equipment manufacturer in the prototype manufacturing department. After 6 years of assembling, aligning and upgrading machines and sub assemblies, I’ve got the change to become third line technical support for the latest generation of lithography machines. This included field service visits around the world to train and support the technical team in the office and in the fab.
From there on, I’ve worked as an equipment engineer at Smart photonics. Working mostly at lithography related machines and processes. As this was a small pilot line, with a small equipment team, everyone worked on all systems in the fab. When the capacity of the pilot line needed to be increased, I’ve participated in several teams. One of the roles was as a project lead, having technical discussion with suppliers and updating the management. Other roles consisted of preparing the cleanroom, moving the machines into the factory, assisting during the installation and running the field acceptance tests together with the supplier. All of this during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now I’ve stared a new adventure by founding SMES engineering to support companies on project basis.
